Training Classes

Hoopers

Hoopers is an inclusive low impact sport that is ideal for dogs who can't do agility due to their age, breed or health conditions.

There are no jumps or tight turns, instead dogs will learn to navigate flowing courses of barrels, hoops, tunnels and mats under the owners direction.

Hoopers is all about building up the dogs independence and distance control meaning it involves less running for the handlers than in agility. These skills are useful for young dogs to learn before they go on to agility training.

Classes take place at Winkleigh Wag & Walk on Thursdays 6.30pm over the Summer.

Tricks

Tricks can help dogs build confidence, provide them with a mental and physical workout and be adapted for all ages and abilities. Plus, they are a great way to connect and learn with your dog!

Although the use of props is encouraged, many tricks can be easily replicated with little to no equipment, so they are great for engaging with your dog on rainy days. Because dogs enjoy performing tricks, they can also be used on walks to help keep your dog engaged with you.

Dogs must be comfortable working around other dogs and people.

Classes take place at Sampford Courtenay Village Hall.

Body Confidence

Improve your dog's coordination, balance and confidence with a body confidence class. Exercises will teach your dog rear end awareness to help build and maintain muscle tone in an area that often weakens with age, precise foot placement to help with proprioception and stretches to help maintain flexibility.

Finish the class with a go on the proprioception obstacle course, helping your dog navigate different equipment safely.

Particularly useful for sport or working dogs and many of these exercises can be incorporated into a warm-up routine to help avoid injury.

It is useful if your dog already knows a nose touch and paw, but help can be given if necessary.

All dogs must be fully fit to attend this class. If in doubt, consult with your veterinarian. Dogs must be comfortable working around other dogs and people.

Classes take place at Sampford Courtenay Village Hall and Winkleigh Wag & Walk.

Scentwork

Scentwork is an activity that comes naturally to most dogs and is something that all breeds can do. It’s great for building confidence and is mentally challenging whilst not being too strenuous physically – great for dogs who need limited physical exercise. This class is aimed at beginners but can be adapted for individual dogs.

This class will aim to introduce search games to the dogs and teach owners how to handle their dogs during searches, including by observing their body language for indications that they have picked up the scent. Fun searches will be held ranging from quick wins to build confidence and drive, to themed searches that challenge your dogs skills.

The aim of the class is build the dog's confidence and give owners ideas for searches that can be done at home. The beauty of scentwork is that you don’t need expensive equipment and often searches can be done using the furniture and possessions you have at home.

Dogs must be comfortable working around other dogs and people.

Classes take place at Sampford Courtenay Village Hall.
